Professor Bad Trip
When Romitelli completed his composition Professor Bad Trip for ten musicians in 2001, many people hailed it as a magnum opus of twenty-first-century music. Romitelli studied in Paris and composers Boulez, Grisey and Murail were key sources of inspiration. Romitelli explored the characteristics of sound from musical instruments and threw himself into electronic music. He became fascinated by experiments where acoustic and electronic sounds were interwoven, enabling him to manipulate the listener’s perception and turn listening to his music into a psychedelic experience.
Christian Karlsen, Van Dis and the ensemble hope that Professor Bad Trip will be a pervading sensory experience, pushing the boundaries of what groups like Pink Floyd and The Doors did in the late 1960s, but now enriching the sounds with the nuances of cutting-edge technology and today’s new music. Ensemble Klang will perform Professor Bad Trip accompanied by musicians from the Asko|Schönberg ensemble and the Matangi Quartet.
Other programmes in Dag in de Branding
The municipality of The Hague will present composer Mayke Nas with the Kees van Baaren Award for her composition Down the Rabbit Hole (2012). The Residentie Orkest, conducted by Otto Tausk, will give their rendition of this prize-winning piece in the Zuiderstrandtheater. The programme includes the première of Antony Fiumara’s orchestral version of Simeon ten Holt’s Canto ostinato.
Two young music makers are featured in this edition who are at the core of this season’s Dag in de Branding Festival. Violinist Joseph Puglia plays solo with Asko|Schönberg in a new violin concert by Joey Roukens. The ensemble will also perform Las Casas del Ferrocaril, which composer Natalia Domínguez Rangel wrote for the ensemble in 2008. Temko, an ensemble combining minimal music with heavy metal, starts off the festival with Tannhäuser, where the first 100 seconds of Wagner’s similarly named opera are stretched into half an hour.
